The early history of the Local Government system setup in Sungai Petani began in the 50's, when the Local Council Ordinance 1952 was approved and adopted. Then, in year 1953, the Sungai Petani Town Board for Sungai Petani town administration was established.

On 1 August 1975, the Kuala Muda Local Government District Council (MDKT.KM) was established encompassing Sungai Lalang, Jeniang, Merbok, Bukit Selambau, Bedong and Gurun areas.

On 1 February 1978, the Kuala Muda District Council (MDKM) was established to replace MDKT.KM, following the enforcement of Act 124 of the Local Government Act (Temporary Provision) and was gazetted according to Section 3 of the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171).

  • Sungai Petani Municipal Council
  • Kuala Muda, Kota Kuala Muda, Padang Lembu, Semeling, Tanjung Dawai dan Tikam Batu Municipal Boards
  • Sungai Lalang, Jeniang, Merbok, Bukit Selambau, Bedong dan Gurun Local Councils

Kuala Muda District Council (MDKM) is responsible to administer the entire Kuala Muda district area in terms of the planning, building control, health, project and licensing progress aspects. Sungai Petani once again was upgraded to Municipal Council on 2 July 1994 equivalent to 22 Muharram 1415H and this declaration was officiated by YAB Tan Sri Dato' Seri Haji Osman bin Haji Aroff, PSM, SSDK, DHMS, JMN, JP – the Menteri Besar of Kedah Darul Aman at that time.

With this upgrade, Sungai Petani Municipal Council (MPSPK) is fully responsible on the development control, licensing, planning, providing infrastructure facilities and many more to ensure of the town development and wellbeing of residents in Sungai Petani town specifically and Kuala Muda generally.
